Make Happy Tummies

Interactive Donation Map

About the Client

The Grocery Foundation is a Canadian nonprofit organization dedicated to improving student nutrition programs across Canada. Through partnerships with grocery retailers, suppliers, and community organizations, the Foundation helps ensure children have access to healthy food at school.

The Make Happy Tummies campaign was developed as a public-facing initiative to raise awareness and encourage donations by showcasing the collective impact of contributors across the province.

The Client's Problem

The Grocery Foundation needed a more engaging and transparent way to demonstrate the impact of donations for a meeting held with potential sponsors for the upcoming campaign. They were looking for a for people to see how many programs were available in each province/territory.

Key challenges included:

  • Communicating impact in a way that felt tangible and localized
  • Encouraging donor participation through social proof
  • Differentiating the campaign from traditional, static donation pages
  • Presenting a growing dataset of contributors in a clear, meaningful way
  • Ensuring the solution was fully bilingual

They needed a solution that would not only inform users, but actively involve them in the story of the campaign.

The Process & Solution

We designed and developed a custom interactive donation map that allowed users to explore student nutrition programs the Foundation supports geographically across Canada. The interactive donation map would used on a 55″ touch-screen television and needed to work on large-screen devices.

The process included:

  • Discovery & Strategy: Collaborating with stakeholders to define how location-based storytelling could reinforce the campaign’s message and increase engagement
  • UX Design: Structuring an intuitive interface that allowed users to easily navigate the map, explore regions, and view donor activity without friction
  • Custom Development: Building a dynamic map interface that plotted donation data at the click of a button, in addition to showing nearby schools if a user were to search by location, integrating seamlessly with the campaign’s backend data sources
  • Performance Optimization: Ensuring the map remained fast and responsive, even as the volume of data increased
  • Responsive Design: Adapting the experience for mobile users without sacrificing usability or clarity

The final product transformed a static list of student nutrition programs into a living, visual representation of community support—making the campaign feel active, transparent, and collaborative. Users could search both by location, similar to how a typical Google Map would function, but also by clicking a button associated with any of the Canadian provinces. When a  user clicked on a province button, an aside would popup that would indicate how many student nutrition programs are funded through the Make Happy Tummies campaign.

The Client's Results

The fully bilingual interactive donation map became a central feature of the Make Happy Tummies sales meeting, significantly enhancing user engagement and storytelling. By turning donation data into an interactive experience, the Grocery Foundation was able to better connect with potential sponsors and reinforce the real-world impact of every contribution.
